Dr. Diane Gross, CI, CT, Dr. of Oriental Medicine (NM) and licensed practicing
Acupuncturist, is the leading sign language ergonomic consultant. Her specialty areas are instruction and diagnostics
for interpreters, VRS centers and interpreting agencies seeking to reduce and/or manage the risk of interpreting
related injuries (IRI), and assessing work situations potentially leading to injury.
As Project Coordinator and Senior Writer, she spearheaded the development
of training materials on prevention and management of IRI for the interpreting staff of over 100 at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology). This information is now utilized by various organizations
and programs across the country, and at NTID. Over several years, Dr. Gross consulted with and worked alongside
experts in Occupational Medicine, physical therapists, chiropractors, exercise physiologists, acupuncturists, psychologists,
trainers, interpreters and others in developing these materials. She worked cooperatively with a licensed
physical therapist and ergonomic specialist in identifying high-risk interpreting ergonomics. Diane then developed remediation
strategies and interventions specifically applicable to sign language interpreting thus preserving the
integrity of interpreting and creating "safe signing" techniques. (see more at Why TerpHealth??). Professionally interpreting since 1979, former Director of Interpreting
Services for a national sign language interpreting agency for 4 years, and a Doctor of Oriental
Medicine (NM) and licensed practicing acupuncturist, Diane brings unique and valuable perspectives to pain prevention,
intervention and management techniques and a clear sense of the service business. Dr. Gross' self-care
techniques have brought relief to many.
